Picture: Er. writer and journalist Omer Mohamed Ahmed broadcasting from the ELF radio in field 1980
Picture of Eritrean writer and journalist, Omer Mohamed Ahmed, broadcasting from the ELF radio in the field in 1980. According to the info I got from a colleague who was involved in the project, the mobile radio transmitter was bought from Germany and the Eritrean engineers and technicians were trained there to operate it. It reached the field around October 1980. The experimental transmission took long time. Real programs didn't take long as the ELF retreated to Sudan after the combined EPLF/TPLF attack. The good thing about the project was that it was purely bought from contributions of ELF members, mainly from Saudi Arabia. The radio was not among the arms and equipment confiscated by Sudan. It was taken to what was known then, as the North.
