Eritreans who served Italy in Libya

28 January 1912: The first battalion of young Eritrean recruits was sent to Tripoli to fight Italy’s war against Omar Mukhtar of Libya. Up to 60,000 Eritreans were reportedly sent to that war during the 21-year period that it raged (1911 and 1932).

Both Libya and Eritrea were Italian colonies. Young Eritreans were hoarded from all parts of the country (the gifa that continues to-date unabated) and conscripted to serve in the Italian colonial army. Eritrea was turned into a colony of soldiers. Italian documents show that by 1907, there were 5132 men in the army and this number increased to 60,200 by the end of 1935. The first Eritrean battalion of 1,112 men was sent to Libya in early 1912, and by July of the same year, there were 3,728 Eritreans there. Though Eritreans were forced to fight in Libya and other Italian colonies, it remains a sad part of our history

Zaptie            1.85 - 2.25

Ascari            1.50 - 2.60

Muntaz          2.20 - 2.50

Buluk-Bash   2.70 - 3.50

Shum-Bash   5.00 - 6.00

The exchange rate for the Italian Lire to the US dollar was 19 to 1 in 1937
