Berekentia an Eritrean novel

---------------

‘Berekentia’ (which means in Blin the land of the wise woman) is a name of a village not far from Keren and the name of one of the novels by Eritrean writer, Abubaker Hamid Kahal.
It is a passionate description among other things of the simple, naïve and innocent rural life in the villages around Keren; before it was spoiled by the Ethiopian aggressors and their collaborators the ‘Eritrean Kommandos’ who were even much brutal than the Ethiopian army. It narrates how life changed afterwards. Through the first visit of a villager to a city (Keren) the writer takes us to the different parts of Keren: Hilet Wereba, Shifshifit, Lalimba, Itaaber, the Anseba Footbal Club, Fatna Jengeren and others. The experiences of the villager in Keren is no less than that of ‘Crocodile Dundee’’ in the US. We get a glimpse of the life of the early ELF fighters in the region, the beginning of the civil war and along the author touches on local knowledge and on the intrigues of the Imperial Palace in Addis.
