Eritrea: the land of missed opportunities and the Eritreans who cannot see beyond Eritrea and Ethiopia as if those countries are the center of the universe: posted at FB 29 Novemebr 2014
- There are those of them who think like DIA that their country is doing better than Ethiopia and so it should be the best country in the world. They fail to see how far Ethiopia has developed in the last 23 years
- As things have gone so wrong after liberation, there are those who long and miss “Mother Ethiopia”. Those h...ave even started questioning everything about Eritrea: the referendum, the armed struggle, the independence and what have you. For them, the only place where there is development is in Ethiopia. They see that all our problems exist because we separated from Ethiopia and so the best solution, the panacea, is to go back to Ethiopia. For them the issue is about the Habesha Eritreans who have their kinsmen in Ethiopia. They forget that Eritrea is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious and they do not care about the non-Habesh Eritreans. They forget that their forefathers slogan was ‘Ethiopia or Death’ and they got enough of both. Both groups do not see other options and possibilities.

- During Italian colonialism, though built for the benefit of the colonizers, we had some of the best roads, railways and a unique cableway. Though not self sufficient then, the country used to export fruits, vegetables, dairy products and vaccines. During the British period, we had relative degree of freedom of expression, better education, and political parties. During the earlier Federation period we had a constitution and Parliament and self rule. If we had opted for independence or trusteeship of Italy or Britain we would have been relatively much better, at. We lost because of the ‘Andinet Party’.
- We need to understand there is a whole lot world of options and opportunities beyond Eritrea-Ethiopia dichotomy. We are so fragmented that we may even miss a historic opportunity again, after the regime falls
