What do we know about the massacre of about 150 Muslims 18 and 19 June 1997?
Copied from a post by Ahmed Raji
The news of this atrocity first broke in January 2003 in a programme by TV Zete (a Tigrinya TV station based in Sweden), which reported that on the night of 18 June 1997, from 8:20 PM to 2 AM the next day, 150 Eritrean Muslim men were executed by the National Security. Awate website also published a report later that year which concluded that although no smoking gun could be found, there was plenty of circumstantial evidence supporting the allegation.
I was in Asmara at the time and after some probing I managed to receive credible information about the incident which took place in the western outskirts of Asmara. In June of 2004 I sent a brief testimony from Asmara (published on Awate.com on 19 June 2004) in which I provided additional evidence of the killing. Here is the link:
The quality of the information I received was very solid. However, I had to strip my report of any details that would have given away my sources.
I am positive that more witnesses will come forward in due course. In the meantime, I encourage everyone who has any piece of related information to shed more light on the subject.
