Judiciary in Eritrea during the Italian rule

Judiciary in Eritrea during the Italian rule

The judiciary administered four types of law:

- The Italian Penal Code, which was applicable to all inhabitants of the territory
- The Italian Civil Code, which extended to all civil issues where at least one of the parties was an Italian citizen
- Sharia or Islamic Law, which obtained in certain civil issues, where the parties were Muslims; and
- Eritrean Customary Law, which in appropriate form, was enforced in each civil case between Eritreans
